The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) defines the ergonomics field in broad terms as “the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system.”1 Working in a professional capacity, Ergonomists apply theory, principles, data, and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.” The safety and health of employees isn’t just a nice-to-have, of course; it’s a bottom-line issue. Protecting workers from fatigue and injury helps keep them working. Ergonomic values like giving workers enough time to perform tasks and recover from stressors, and reducing stressful repetitive efforts like reaching and lifting, work against physical and mental fatigue that could lead to injury and product defects.
